Church leaders will address the significance of ministerial effectiveness, sacraments, orders, candidacy, and ordination during this two-day event co-sponsored by Garrett-Evangelical and UMC's General Board of Higher Education and Ministry. All aspects of the Ministry Study adopted during UMC's 2009 General Conference will be open for discussion.

Visiting speakers and panelists are:

  • Bishop Alfred W. Gwinn from the North Carolina Annual Conference, Chair of the 2008 Ministry Study
  • Bishop Grant Hagiya from the Pacific Northwest and Alaska Annual Conferences, Episcopal member of the 2008 Ministry Study
  • Dean Robin Lovin, Perkins School of Theology Professor of Ethics and contributor to the 2000 Ministry Study
  • Rev. Mary Ann Moman, Associate General Secretary in UMC's Division of Ordained Ministry

In addition, members of the Garrett-Evangelical faculty will present papers on the Commission's four working groups, small discussion groups will focus on these papers, and minutes of these group discussions will go to the Commission:

  • Dr. Margaret Ann Crain, Professor of Christian Education and Director of Deacon Program, will deliver a paper on orders
  • Dr. Ron Anderson, the Ernest and Bernice Styberg Associate Professor of Worship and Director of the Nellie B. Ebersole Program in Music Ministry, will deliver a paper on sacraments
  • Dr. Mark Fowler, Associate Professor of Church Leadership and Vice President for Vocation and Ministry, will deliver a paper on candidacy
  • Dr. Jim Papandrea, Visiting Assistant Professor of Church History, will deliver a paper on ordination.
