Admission Requirements
The requirements for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree program at Garrett-Evangelical include:
- M.Div., M.C.E., M.T.S, or M.A. in religious or theological studies or the equivalent from an accredited college or university
- Research statement
- Sample of academic writing
- Statement on professional experience
- Three recommendations from individuals who know your potential for academic research and church leadership (a fourth clinical recommendation is required of Pastoral Theology, Personality and Culture applicants)
- Academic transcripts
- Official Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores
- Proficiency in the English language, including official TOEFL scores for international students (minimum score of 250 on the CBT or 100 on the iBT).
- For a concentration in:
- Christian Education and Congregational Studies, relevant ministry experience is required
- Pastoral Theology, Personality and Culture, one year of clinical training is required (equivalent to two quarters of clinical pastoral education or one year of part-time training in pastoral counseling)
- Other materials or testing, if deemed necessary by the faculty admissions committee
The admissions committee reserves the right to determine in its sole judgment whether an applicant is a suitable candidate for a specific concentration in the Ph.D. program.
